Splits and bonuses are the thing that breaks basket backtests

Exchange closing prices are not adjusted for corporate actions. A 1:10 split costs the holder nothing but drops the printed price by 90%, and a backtest that chains closing prices reads that as a catastrophic day. Most tools get this wrong quietly.

Here, a day that looks impossible is matched against the ratios splits and bonuses actually take. Where it fits one, the ratio is divided out and the stock is kept — and the correction is listed in the results with its date, so you can check it against the company’s own announcement. The genuine price move on that day survives; only the ratio is removed. Where nothing explains the day, the stock is dropped from the basket and named, because there is no honest way to price through it.
