What it is

SmartAPI is free for both trading and data, and Angel One holds broker, adviser, research analyst and portfolio manager registrations with SEBI.

We tested this API directly rather than relying on documentation. Index and equity candles work well, and options candles return full OHLC plus volume for contracts that are still live.

The problem is upstream of the data endpoint. The instrument master returns only unexpired contracts — at the time of testing the nearest expiry available was over two weeks out, with nothing before it. An expired contract has no symbol token, so there is no identifier to request history for. The gap is not that the history is empty; it is that the contract is unreachable.

That rules SmartAPI out as a backtesting data source for options, while leaving it perfectly usable for live analysis, equities and index work.
